As the violence along the border continues, we are not taking volunteers into the colonias.

 

However, I will walk the streets twice a month and personally see the needs of the working poor and the children. I will help in every way that we can, but I cannot accomplish much without the thousands of people that have helped Paper Houses.

 

We are living in difficult times with a lot of uncertainty. However, we can still afford 12-cents a day to provide primary school children a meal. For many of these children, this meal is the best meal they will have today.

The paradox of the world's economy is that the conditions that cause our own income to decrease causes the income of the poor to also decrease. Just as their need becomes greater, our ability to help is lessoned.

 

I am often asked why we should help 'those people' when our own people are not doing so well.

First, I do volunteer work in America as do members of our board and many of our supporters.

We focus on the working poor of the colonias because they work 40-hours a week and bring home $65. People living in America at the 'poverty level' earn almost 7 times that amount. This does NOT take items like our country's subsidized housing into account!

 

Our national debate about immigration, both legal and illegal, is partially resolved when we help the working poor to remain in Mexico. Few among us would not hesitate to cross the border if it was the only way to save the life of our child. These families are working hard to survive in Mexico and it is our own interest to help these people.

 

Most of us donate money and time simply because it is the right thing to do.
