Lupita

Lupita and her mother with Bob Decker at the Christmas fiesta. Lupita is 23 years old; her body stopped growing at about age five.

Lupita is 23 years old.
Most people who meet her think she is a child.

Doctors once told her mother that Lupita would not live beyond two years. This photo was taken on December 28, 2025. Lupita is still here.

She is paralyzed from the neck down and cannot speak. There is nothing medicine can do to change her condition. And because her needs will never “end,” many people quietly turn away—unsure how to help when there is no final outcome.

But Lupita’s life matters. And so does her mother’s.

I met them many years ago and like everyone else, I was shocked to learn of Lupita’s age. Though she cannot speak, Lupita sometimes seems to enjoy music or being outdoors.

Her mother loves her with the same fierce devotion I have for my own daughters. Caring for Lupita is a full-time job. Our grocery support is critical—it puts food on their table and helps them survive with dignity.

Sometimes, helping doesn’t mean fixing. Sometimes, it simply means not turning away.

Most people think she is six.
